Inflation is shrinking wallets lately, and that’s not the only thing. Everything seems to cost more money, no matter what it is.
Consumers are noticing higher prices at restaurants — even their favorite fast food joints — but leave feeling just as hungry as when they came in.
Restaurant Portions Are About to Get a Lot Smaller — Here’s Why
Food portions in America have given other countries pause for the better part of 40 years — it’s not easy to find a 3/4 lb. burger or a massive stack of pancakes in the U.K., for example — to the point that it has gotten out of hand.
America is the 10th most obese country in the world, but we like money more than we like food, according to a recent survey. More than 75 percent of customers polled by the National Restaurant Association said they want smaller portions for less money.
Restaurants are finally listening, per the New York Times.
In January, Subway introduced a snack-focused menu that includes smaller bites like $3 hot wraps. Burger King shrank its 10-piece chicken nugget order to eight. Panera Bread’s You Pick Two, which is a cup of soup with either a half-sandwich or half of a salad, is a new option ,as well.
These shifts also represent the fact that the younger generation is snacking more frequently and passing on the Big 3 meals of the day. It’s a new trend called snackification.
