Walgreens to Close Nearly Every Location for 24 Hours: Here’s Why

There are a few major drug store chains in America that most of us use to get our prescription drugs. There are the majors like CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens, and then there are plenty of one-off locations as well, for those that like a more personal experience.

In the past year or so, each of the Big 3 have had to shutter locations due to various economic challenges.

With business not at its best for the traditional drug store here in America, it is interesting to see one of the major drug stores going dark for an entire 24 hours across the majority of their locations.,

Walgreens to Close Nearly Every Location for 24 hours: Here’s Why

It might not be the best move, revenue wise, but Walgreens wants to show solidarity with its own workforce and will close just about all of its 8,554 stores across America on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 28).

The move mirrors some other large retailers that do that, like Walmart, Best Buy and Target. The only difference is that at those stores, what might need to be purchased on Thanksgiving Day might not be as vital to survival.

Yeah, you can’t go to Target to get that casserole dish you need for your big Thanksgiving dinner, but you will likely survive that situation. Whereas some people who need certain prescriptions to live and function daily will now have to make sure they plan far in advance and have enough of their medicine to get them through the 24-hour window of Walgreens closures.

That is, unless they live near the only 500 locations out of the more than 8,500 that are 24-hour pharmacies — those 500 stores will remain open. Walgreens will also keep some of their distribution sites up and running so they can keep things fluid behind the scenes.
