Tyler Childers Announces New Album ‘Snipe Hunter’

Tyler Childers has announced his new album with the release of a song he’s never before recorded: “Nose on the Grindstone.” The song about the effects of the opioid crisis on Appalachia dropped on Thursday along with the release date for Snipe Hunter, the Kentucky songwriter’s latest LP. Produced by Rick Rubin, Snipe Hunter arrives July 25 via Childers’ own Hickman Holler Records and RCA.

“Nose on the Grindstone” has turned up regularly in Childers’ live sets. “Daddy worked like a mule minin’ Pike County coal/’Til he fucked up his back and couldn’t work anymore,” goes the intro. “He said one of these days, you’ll get out of these hills/Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills.” But until now, the singer had never recorded and released a studio version.

Conversely, Childers did record his song “Long Violent History” in 2020 but had never performed it live until earlier this week onstage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, where ICE raids targeting immigrants and subsequent protests are roiling the city.

Childers, along with Chris Stapleton, will headline Healing Appalachia,  a music festival that raises awareness for and celebrates recovery from opioid addiction, in September in Ashland, Kentucky.
