Top 3 Sheryl Crow Songs, Per ‘High Enough’ Singer Lexie Hayden

Country singer Lexie Hayden lists Sherly Crow as a major influence, and you believe it when you listen to “High Enough,” her newest single.

As the Virginia native prepares to drop her Counting Rainbows album this month, we asked her to name her Top 3 Sheryl Crow songs. The legendary pop star’s biggest hit isn’t on this list, which is always a sure sign that someone genuine fan.

Instead find a mid-career smash, a heartbreaker and a gorgeous cover song that still hits 20 years later.

Jason Nix, Alex Kiel and Andrea Dozzi helped Hayden write “High Enough,” and Nix (who co-wrote “Things a Man Oughta Know” for Lainey Wilson) sings and stars in the music video for the song.

“Soak Up the Sun”
I mean, talk about iconic songs. I cover this song with my band and it’s just one of the best feel-good songs of all time. Lyrically, it’s got depth, but it still has that big singalong chorus that everyone can grab onto. It’s such a simple message at the core ,but it’s a message that will never go out of style; which is why it still lights up every room to this day.

“My Favorite Mistake”
My favorite thing about this song is how it’s so haunting, but happy sounding at the same time. The switch from the minor chords in the verse to all major in the chorus is such a beautiful Sheryl trick. It grooves and makes you tap your feet, but lyrically it’s about heartbreak. I’m a fan of sad songs that sound happy and this one is the gold standard of those.

“The First Cut Is the Deepest”
Believe it or not, this song was a hit for six different artists. The only version I ever knew growing up though was Sheryl Crow. This is a beautiful reminder that an artist doesn’t have to write a song for it to become their own. One of my favorite songs lyrically of all time, and nothing will ever compare to Sheryl’s 2003 release of it. (Also, fun fact, this song was written in 1967 by Cat Stevens.)
