Ronnie McDowell to Undergo Carotid Endarterectomy After Onstage Scare

Country star Ronnie McDowell is scheduled to undergo surgery weeks after suffering a stroke during a performance at the Summer Solstice Music Festival. His son, Tyler McDowell, tells Rolling Stone that the 75-year-old singer will have a carotid endarterectomy on July 22 to remove plaque buildup from an artery.

“One overnight stay, and God willing, he’ll be back at it in no time,” Tyler tells Rolling Stone. “We’re actually off to Texas this weekend for two shows before the surgery. I’m nervous, but the doctor gave him the green light—so long as he skips the Dirty Dancing moves. Then again, anyone who’s ever seen a Ronnie McDowell show knows, staying in a ‘circle’ ain’t really his thing.”

Fans expressed their concern for McDowell — known for songs “Older Women,” “The King Is Gone,” and “Bad Reputation” — after he was seen slurring his words onstage during a show at the Summer Solstice Music Festival in Oley. He was then hospitalized and discharged following the medical scare.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their support during this time of dealing with a stroke, and for all the wonderful cards, thoughts, and prayers from all across America and around the world,” McDowell tells Rolling Stone Thursday. “Tuesday morning at Vanderbilt Hospital, they’re going to take the plaque out of my neck, and I can’t wait to get back to my P90X!! Thanks again to everyone. Love y’all.”

McDowell has been accompanied by his son Tyler, throughout his medical recovery. In a statement to Rolling Stone, Tyler praised his father’s strength and credited him for “showing me how to chase [my dreams].”

“He’s taught me everything from riding a bike to entertaining a crowd—and most of all, how to try and be a good man. He’s more than a father—he’s my buddy,” Tyler says. “Seeing how much he and his music have impacted the world means the world to me. I’m so grateful for the kindness, love, and prayers. I just pray the good Lord keeps blessing us… because we’ve still got songs to sing, art to share, and memories to make.”
