Lainey Wilson is dropping her new album, Whirlwind, Friday (Aug. 23), and it is stacked full of great songs, including collaborations.
One of those collaborations is “Good Horses,” which features Miranda Lambert.
During the latest episode of Taste of Country Nights: On Demand, Wilson she dove into her friendship with her fellow country star to host Evan Paul.
Lainey Wilson’s Friendship With Miranda Lambert
The “Hang Tight Honey” singer and “Tin Man” hitmaker star have become good friends, and their relationship goes back several years.
“It was my birthday, several years ago, she didn’t even know it was my birthday,” Wison recalls of how she met Lambert.
“She just got my number from somebody, I think she heard ‘Things a Man Oughta Know.’ She’s like, ‘Well, this girl can change a tire and catch a fish, maybe we can be friends,'” she says with a chuckle.
“She texted me and just said, ‘Hey, it’s Miranda, I just wanted to say I love your music and we should catch up soon.'”
Wilson says she was quick to reply — no cat and mouse game here.
“We did, and I mean, I knew before she even knew me, I was like, ‘Once we meet we’ll be friends,’ because we kinda have a lot in common.”
“She’s kinda just become my country music big sister,” Wilson says. “She tells me what to do and what not to do. She checks on me, cares for me, she’s like, ‘Where you at? How’s your head? How’s your heart?'”
Wilson feels it’s important to have someone in the industry to look up to — someone who knows what she’s going through as a relatively new artist who shot to massive success quickly.
“I think it’s important to have folks like that who have kind of been there, done that, so you can call ’em and be like, ‘Hey, is it normal that I’m feeling this way about this?’ And they can give you a little bit of peace.”
What she admires most about Lambert? The same “grit and determination” fans love.
“love how she has had longevity. I think she just has this spitfire spirit about her that is contagious,” Wilson says.
Plus, she gives great advice.
Miranda Lambert’s Good Advice for Lainey Wilson
“She definitely tells me that you gotta take care of the racehorse, meaning yourself. If it’s not fed and watered and taken care of, the rest of the team loses.”
“So I gotta be able to show up my best self and be rested, feel good, be mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally okay,” Wilson explains. With that comes some pressure.
“We went from five people in our crew a year-and-a-half ago, to 60,” she says. “So I’m helping 60 families, ya know. That’s a lot of pressure, so I gotta make sure this ship don’t go down.”
