BLACKPINK‘s LISA is a heartbroken widow haunted by the dreams of her one true love in the emotional five-minute video for her Alter Ego debut solo album single “Dream.” The dramatic clip written and directed by OJun Kwon co-stars Japanese model/actor Kentaro Sakaguchi (Color Me True, The Final Piece) as LISA’s beloved.
The White Lotus actress and K-pop girl group superstar leans into her acting chops in the clip that opens with her in black funeral clothes, seated in a pew as she exhales, “I’ve been thinking/ That I got no idea what you’re thinking/ Are you happy? Are you sad?/ Are you always gonna hate me for that night in Tokyo?” over spooky synths.
She solemnly approaches the casket and lays a single white flower on her lover’s body as we glimpse Sakaguchi’s character seemingly walking in the door and catching her eye while she sings, “But I know a place/ Where we can be us/ I know it ain’t real/ But it’s real enough/ From sun going down to sun coming up/ It’s like you’re here with me/ Whenever I close my eyes.”
The scene then shifts to the pair driving in a car on a country road together, with Sakaguchi’s grin making LISA smile as she fingers the wedding band hanging from a chain around her neck. Their road trip continues in a midnight stop at a gas station, where he hands over the car keys to LISA, setting off a montage of black and white clips from the couple’s happier days filled with dancing and laughing together.
Then, spoiler alert, she walks over to the passenger side of the car to reveal that he’s been dead all along, staring at a metallic urn featuring his ashes. As she rows the remains out to the middle of a lake we get another flashback to a conversation between the couple about their dreams for the next life. In the dialog-only bit, Sakaguchi responds to a question about what he wants to be on his second go-round by bouncing it back, with LISA saying she’d come back as a tree.
Dubbing her answer “beautiful,” he says, in that case, he’d like to be the lake in front of that tree, musing about the magical way the leaves are reflected off the water as the swoony track bubbles back up and the singer hugs the urn before releasing a handful of remains onto the surface of the water.
LISA recently earned her third MTV VMA nomination for best K-pop for the single “Born Again” with Doja Cat and RAYE; she won in that category last year with the Alter Ego track “Rockstar.” The singer is currently on BLACKPINK’s Deadline World Tour, which is slated to hit London’s Wembley Stadium on Friday (Aug. 15) and Saturday (Aug. 16).
