Jesusfreakhideout.com: Mark Fonseca, “ARIZONA – Single” Review

It seems quite natural for artists to be inspired by the American West. Plenty of art has sprung from the more arid regions of the United States. Singer/songwriter Mark Fonseca‘s latest single joins that multitude with “ARIZONA.” Musically, it feels like a track that embodies a Western vibe. Written in a minor key, reverb helps the music mimic the open space of an Arizona desert. Fonseca’s voice always carries a rugged, haunted quality to it that backs the music as well as the lyrics. While, in some sense, “ARIZONA” is a worshipful tune, it’s not the straight-up type of praise the average church would be singing on Sunday. Fonseca makes sure the listener gets a sense of the place by mentioning “the ground so red,” “Saguaros,” or the “painted desert sky.” This gives the single a uniqueness to it that avoids a more generic “inspired by nature” song.

The central message here, however, isn’t inspiration leading to worship; it’s a longing for renewal. “It’s been a long time since Eden/And dust kicks up in a desertland,” the track begins, setting the tone for the rest of the song. As Fonseca continues, he pushes home the feeling of restoration and completion, knowing it will happen one day. The chorus sees some of that fulfillment already present in our time: “Your glory rushes over/The rocks of Arizona.” All of these elements may make “ARIZONA” feel like a niche track, but it really shows the strength of Mark Fonseca’s writing. He takes eschatology and wraps it in the Arizona landscape. As the listener, you can almost picture yourself there, experiencing the same feelings. Overall, “ARIZONA” is a track worthy of a few listens and will likely express the way a lot of people are feeling this year.
