Jennifer Aniston Is Rebooting Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’

The legacy of the 1980 film 9 to 5 will live on in a new reimagining of the film from Jennifer Aniston. The iconic women’s rights movie starred Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as co-workers who conspire to bring down their sexist boss in the name of equality.

During the Hollywood premiere of the 2022 documentary Still Working 9 to 5 on Wednesday (May 30), Tomlin and Fonda shared their thoughts about the upcoming project.

“We hope she has great success,” Tomlin tells Variety. “It’s a hard nut to crack because the issues are somewhat different.”

“There’s still the undercurrent of the same kind of negativity towards females … [they’re] not easy-to-solve issues,” she continues. “So we’re very eager to see what they do.”

Fonda adds, “I hope she does it.”

ERA Coalition — the event’s sponsor — recognized the original trio with the Women’s Equality Trailblazer Award. Parton was not in attendance to receive the honor. The country singer has yet to comment on Aniston’s film, which has yet to reveal any details such as a cast, title or timeline for production.

What Is Still Working 9 to 5 About?

Still Working 9 to 5 is a documentary that doubles as both a celebration of the success of the film and a reminder that some things are worth fighting for. The film explores 40 years of workplace inequality.

While the original 1980s film used Parton’s song “9 to 5,” the documentary features a reimagined version recorded by the country veteran and Kelly Clarkson.

The popularity of the film spawned a musical of the same name starring Allison Janney, Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty. The show featured music and lyrics from Parton and opened on Broadway in 2009. While the production was short lived in New York City, it toured the U.S., the U.K. and Australia for several years after its initial run.
