Elle King told her truth about her relationship with her father and now he’s responding.
Comedian and Saturday Night Live alum Rob Schneider is King’s father. Earlier this week she told Bunnie Xo‘s Dumb Blonde podcast about being sent to “fat camp” and being yelled at if she interrupted a scene on one of his movie sets (Deuce Bigalow, The Hot Chick etc …).
She also took exception to his social and political views.
- Schneider is a guest on the Tucker Carlson Show podcast this week. The full episode airs Thursday (Aug. 15).
- Carlson shared a clip on social media on Wednesday. It’s heavily edited.
- King said that when she got her record deal she had gone several years without speaking to him.
“I don’t want to be associated with him,” King says, adding that when journalists would ask her about him he said, “Don’t f–king talk about me in the press.”
Taste of Country talked to King about her dad in early 2023 and at the time their relationship seemed to be OK. “My dad is funny and he’s so proud of me. It’s weird,” she shared.
“He loves my music. At least three times a week he’s like, ‘Please send me the albums.’ ‘No! You play it for people I am not sending it to you. No.'”
Now, she’s not holding back about how things were growing up.
“…My dad forgot every single birthday,” the “Drunk and I Don’t Wanna Go Home” hitmaker tells the pod. “I spent my 18th birthday in a summer school and they brought me cupcakes, and I came home and my dad forgot my birthday.”
Schneider didn’t address any of her specific accusations. In the footage released this week he apologized and emphasized how much he loved her.
“I want to just tell my daughter, ‘Elle, I love you and I wish I was the father in my 20s that you needed,” he begins. “Clearly I wasn’t, and I hope you can forgive me for my shortcomings. I love you completely.”
“I love you entirely. And I just want you to be well and happy with you and your beautiful baby, Lucky. I wish you the best, I feel terrible, and I just want you to know that I don’t take anything you say personally.”
The comic goes on to say he hopes King can heal.
The interview also finds King talking about a January performance at the Grand Ole Opry where she botched a tribute to Dolly Parton. She appeared to be drunk at the time and said she was “f—ing hammered.”
“I’ve had to heal and deal and go through things,” King told the Off the Vine podcast previously. “And, someone said to me, I think you might find a silver lining or something good that comes out of your experience with that.”
King is currently on the Baby’s Daddy Tour through 2024. Dumb Blonde podcast host Bunnie Xo’s husband is country singer Jelly Roll.
