Glee star Becca Tobin has some thoughts on the Ashley Tisdale–Hilary Duff mom group drama, which she shared on her podcast, The LadyGang, on Tuesday (Jan. 13).
“I don’t know a lot of the inner workings of the toxic mom group,” Tobin explained. “For those of you who have been under a rock, Ashley Tisdale did an article with The Cut and she talked about how she’s in this mom group and it started to become very high school, very cliquey. She didn’t name any names. She just kind of did this whole thing and I can see both sides.”
Tobin went on to say that a lot of mothers face this issue, but thinks Tisdale should have been more careful. “It’s relatable. So many women deal with this as they become moms and navigate the mom groups. And so I understand why she did it. But what I don’t understand is that somebody in her life should have told her ‘The internet sleuths of America, of the world, are so incredible that they’re going to know within three seconds that this article comes out exactly who you’re talking about,’” she said. “I don’t think she understands the level at which people are watching her. And that era, the Hilary Duffs and the Ashley Tisdales, they still have such hardcore stans that there are people still invested in their every move on social media.”
But the actress-singer is not a fan of musician Matthew Koma weighing in to defend his wife. “I don’t think there’s any loser, there’s no loser in this group to me, except for Hilary Duff’s husband. I think it is so gross when husbands jump in and get petty. Especially since Ashley did not name names,” she said. “If Ashley had come out and said Hilary was said person being a mean girl, I would understand the husband coming to her defense. But I’m really rubbed the wrong way when a man inserts himself like this, and it’s solely for him to get attention.”
“He attacked a woman,” she continued. “He called her self-obsessed or whatever he said, something about her being self-absorbed. And I think that’s so tacky. I would be so upset with my husband.”
Billboard has reached out to Duff’s reps and Koma for comment.
After Tisdale’s essay was published, people quickly figured out who the other moms allegedly were, with rumored names including Duff, Mandy Moore and Meghan Trainor, leading Koma to clap back on social media. “When You’re The Most Self Obsessed Tone Deaf Person On Earth, Other Moms Tend To Shift Focus To Their Actual Toddlers,” read the fake headline on the mocked up cover that took a shot at Tisdale’s The Cut artwork. The subhead read: “A Mom Group Tell All Through A Father’s Eyes.”
