Elle King Says One Great Thing Came From Her Rob Schneider Feud

When Elle King opened up about her tumultuous relationship with her dad Rob Schneider during her episode of Bunnie Xo‘s Dumb Blonde podcast, she never expected her comments to reach as far as they did.

“I never in a million years thought that was going to go so viral,” King tells People in a new interview. “I was just speaking about my childhood and about my truth. I was not trying to hurt him.”

At the time, King brought up a number of points, including her famous father’s decision to send her to “fat camp” and how she felt secondary to his film career during the summers she spent with him. But now, she says the most important comment she made was a condemnation of some transphobic and homophobic comments that Schneider has made in the past.

Speaking up against those, she says, sent an important message of allyship to her LGBTQ+ fans.

“What I will say is the best thing that came from that is that my incredible LGBTQ+ community knows that they have an ally in me,” she continues. “And if that’s the biggest thing to come out of that platform, then I would’ve done it 10 more f–king times because I am an ally, they have one in me, and I’m grateful.”

After King appeared on the Dumb Blonde podcast, Schneider publicly apologized to her during an appearance on the Tucker Carlson Show podcast.

“Elle, I love you and I wish I was the father in my 20s that you needed,” he said, adding “I don’t take anything you say personally.”

Even though she wasn’t expecting her comments to go quite so viral, King says that she’s got no regrets about speaking her piece.

“A lot of people said, ‘How could she say that about her family?’ And, ‘Everything needs to be said behind closed doors.’ No, it doesn’t,” the singer goes on to say. “Sometimes you have to just say things and get them off your chest so that you don’t have to carry it for the rest of your life.”

“But ultimately, I think an apology on Tucker Carlson is, like, a double negative, right? Means nothing,” she adds.

King is expected to release a new single called “High Road” on Friday (Sept. 20). In keeping with her last album, Come Get Your Wife, the song will fall within the country format.
