Dolly Parton Musical to Premiere in Nashville This Summer

Dolly: An Original Musical will premiere at Belmont University before heading to Broadway in New York in 2026

Dolly Parton is finally bringing her long-gestating autobiographical production Dolly: An Original Musical to the stage this summer. Parton announced the world premiere from the campus of Belmont University this week, sharing that the musical, which blends some of her most beloved tunes with newly penned material, will play a four-week limited engagement at the Nashville university’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.

“I just want people to go away feeling like they’ve been entertained, of course. But I personally want them to see the person inside of me, the things you go through,” Parton said in a brief Q&A session that also included Bartlett Sher, the musical’s Tony-winning director. “Everybody thinks it’s all glamour and glory, money and fame, but there’s so much more to a life like mine… and the prices that you have to pay, the miles that you have to travel and the sacrifices you have to make.”

Three performers have been chosen to portray Parton at various periods throughout her life, but the results of a global search for the actors have yet to be revealed. The musical’s book was co-written by Parton with two-time Emmy winner Maria S. Schlatter, who collaborated with Parton on the Netflix musical Christmas on the Square. Parton noted onstage that she has known Schlatter since she was young: Schlatter’s father, producer-director George Schlatter, worked with Parton early in her career.

Preview performances begin Friday, July 18, with opening night of the production set for Friday, Aug. 8. The show is slated to conclude its run on Sunday, Aug. 17. Tickets for Dolly: An Original Musical are on sale now at www.dollymusical.com.
