Dasha bumped into Jelly Roll at the 2024 CMT Music Awards. Her report on their interaction isn’t surprising, but it’s still hilarious.
The “Austin” singer explained she and Jelly Roll had trailers next to each other just prior to the show. That’s where stars get ready to walk the red carpet.
- “Austin” is just inside the Top 20 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
- The California native actually made her awards show debut at the CMTs on April 7.
- Talking to Taste of Country, she admitted she was nervous about how she’d be perceived, but wasn’t going to back down.
“I had a long cheetah dress on,” Dasha begins, “and I was like going out of the trailer with my heels on, and his bodyguard was smoking this fat blunt outside, and I literally was like, ‘God I want a hit of that so bad, but I can’t right now. My eyes can’t be red for the carpet.'”
Previously, Jelly Roll had told Taste of Country how smoking marijuana has kept him from doing harder drugs. Just as Dasha was passing by, he walked out, and they chatted.
“Jelly Roll is so kind and his heart is so big,” she gushes before moving on to how they crossed paths again at CMA Fest.
“He was just like, ‘Dude I played my first stadium last year. It’s crazy. You’re on fire, just keep going.’ He’s just such a supporter. He just wants good people to win, and I really like that mentality.”
A month after the CMTs, the country newcomer met Post Malone. In fact, she was part of an ACM afterparty that included Post, Jason Aldean, Jelly Roll and Kane Brown.
“I bumped into him and I’m like, ‘Hey I’m Dasha’ and he’s like, ‘Hey I’m Austin,'” she begins. Post Malone’s real name is Austin Post.
“I’m like, ‘I got a song called ‘Austin” and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I know.’ I was like, ‘Sick! This is sick.’ Because I’m such a Post fan!”
Dasha’s full interview with Taste of Country Nights also features good stories involving Keith Urban and Kelsea Ballerini. At the start she explains what happened to the guy who inspired “Austin” — it’s surprising!
Top 20 Songs of 2024, Ranked (So Far)
New country artists rule this Top Country Songs of 2024 list, but that doesn’t mean traditional country isn’t represented early and often.
Airplay charts, sales data and streaming numbers helped make this list of country music’s Top 20 Songs of 2024, but staff and Taste of Country reader opinion were most influential.
Songs included on previous Top Country Songs lists were not eligible. A song may have been released in 2023, but it had to have the majority of recorded airplay or impact this year to count.
