Costco’s Rotisserie Chicken Change Sparks Angry Outcry

Costco’s Rotisserie Chicken Change Sparks Angry Outcry

In a world full of uncertainty, sometimes having your comfort things can help ease the pressures of life.

If one of those comfort things for you is driving to your local Costco and finishing off a successful Costco run by grabbing and bringing home one of their famed rotisserie chickens, hold on to your britches.

Customers Livid After Costco Makes Major Change to Their Famed Rotisserie Chicken

According to Real Simple, the Costco rotisserie chicken has stayed at $4.99 since 2009, while other chains have consistently raised prices. Other than Costco’s $1.50 hot dog combo, the rotisserie chicken is one of their staple prepared foods that has not had its price inflated.

While that is staying the same, something else is changing with the Costco rotisserie chicken, and shoppers are pretty upset about it.

The $4.99 Costco rotisserie chicken used to come all packaged up nice and neat in a plastic “clamshell” container that was easy to take home and even reuse for the leftovers.

Now, in what Costco says is an environmentally friendly move, the rotisserie chickens are packaged in plastic food service bags.

Shoppers have taken note, and not in a good way. On social media, lots of people have expressed their displeasure with the new packaging, which they say is awful compared to the previous design.

Business writer Trung Phan says, “This was a rare Costco L tbh, the bags are extremely leaky, are less good for storing leftovers, and customers can’t pick out good chickens.”

Another user on X complained that the bags were leaky.

X user @rengle83 says, “Your new roast chicken bags leak like crazy. Whole trunk was soaked by the time I got home. Two bags both leaking.”

On Reddit, the r/Costco subreddit has been full of posts about the bags rolling out in locations across the United States. One Reddit user writes, “New rotisserie chicken packaging looks prone to leaks.”

Not only do customers say the new bags leak, but there is also another issue they are having with the new Costco rotisserie chicken packaging. Multiple Reddit users pointed out that the new bags are not recyclable in their cities, but the rigid “clamshell” containers were.

That is another major loss for Costco in this space, as one of the reasons they pawned off the switch was to help save the environment.

Will you try to get one in the new packaging to see if you can make it home without a leak, or are you chicken?
