Family is deeply important to Charles Wesley Godwin. On his breakthrough album Family Ties, Godwin crafted tuneful tales of his friends, family, and foundation. In many ways, Family Ties is a series of images set to tune, so many of them specifically created for members of his own family. Godwin continues that trajectory with The Family Ties Trilogy, a series of videos that culminates in an ambitious short film.

The film follows one family through three decades – building a family during the Great Depression; living through World War II; and finally moving into life in the 1950’s. Chapter One of The Family Ties Trilogy – “Miner Imperfections” – premiered today via CMT on the Paramount video billboard in Times Square in New York City. Chapter Two – “Another Leaf” – will premiere on June 20, and the full Family Ties Trilogy short film – which includes Chapter Three, “Dance in Rain” – will premiere on June 26.

“The Family Ties Trilogy was an idea that our director, Justin Clough came up with,” Godwin explains. “Family Ties was essentially a concept album, and I loved the idea of extending that theme into our videos. Following the journey of this family through a time period that I’ve always identified and been fascinated with. The story you see here is the story of many American families during that time, and I wanted to let these songs narrate that.”

After releasing Family Ties in the fall of 2023 via Big Loud Records, Godwin and his band the Allegheny High have hit the road hard. In addition to their own headline shows, Godwin and the High have been supporting Luke Combs on his “Growin’ Up and Getting’ Old” stadium tour (their next show with Combs is this Friday at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.), as well as playing major festivals across North America. Back in April, Godwin and the band made their Stagecoach Festival debut, and this weekend they will make their debut at Bonnaroo. They’ll also hit a slew of other festivals this summer, including Bourbon & Beyond, Summerfest, Buckeye Country Superfest, Under the Big Sky, and GoldenSky. Godwin will also open a handful of shows for Turnpike Troubadours, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, and Jamey Johnson this summer.

Godwin has also been nominated for Emerging Act of the Year at the 2024 Americana Honors & Awards, taking place at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn. on September 18, alongside Kaitlin Butts, Wyatt Flores, The Red Clay Strays, and Jobi Riccio.
