Carin León, Kacey Musgraves Drop Bilingual Duet ‘Lost in Translation’

“Even though we speak different languages, we’re all the same, you know?” says Musgraves

Carin León and Kacey Musgraves don’t need to speak the same language to tell a cross-cultural love story. On Friday, the Mexican star and country queen released “Lost in Translation,” a norteño-influenced ranchera track in English and Spanish on which the pair sing about a love that defeats language barriers.

“This really cute idea came about these people meeting and not being able to speak the same language, but love language and body language is universal and you don’t really need words for that,” said Musgraves of the song.

Musgraves and León said they first met in Nashville, and to warm up their vocals, sang along to the classic duet by Juan Gabriel and Rocío Dúrcal, “Fue Un Placer Conocerte.”

“It was a big surprise for me that it was one of my favorite songs…and she knew all the words,” León said.
“I learned it years ago and it’s just stuck in my mind since then,” Musgraves added. “I love it. It’s iconic.”

Musgraves and León co-wrote the song alongside Amy Allen and Shane McAnally, and had Julian Bunetta produce the song with Matt Zara. The stars shared a video of them writing and recording at the RCA Studio in Nashville.

Musgraves, who’s from Texas, has shown love to the Mexican community for years, and even shared videos of herself dancing to cumbias and banda songs at a Mexican music bar in Nashville with Brothers Osborne member TJ’s partner Abi Ventura, who’s from Mexico.

“Growing up singing traditional country and western music,” Musgraves said. “I’ve always loved exploring the borders of Country and where it blends with other styles like Norteño and some regional Mexican sounds that I heard a lot of in Texas.”

León added that he’s “so blessed” to work with Musgraves, who added: “Even though we speak different languages, we’re all the same, you know?”
