We all heard about Bud Light-Gate, the boycott of Bud Light, in April 2023.

The boycott began in response to a social media promotion the company conducted with TikTok personality Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender woman.

Up until that point, Bud Light was the number one beer brand in America. After Bud Light-Gate, the beer slipped to the No. 2 beer brand in America.

Bud Light Just Slipped to No. 3 Beer in America

Michelob Ultra, also brewed by Anheuser-Busch, just moved ahead of Bud Light to become the second-best selling beer at grocery and convenience stores during a big-time sales period in America, stretching between Memorial Day and July 4.

So, although Anheuser-Busch holds the No. 2 and No. 3 top-selling beers in America with Michelob Ultra and Bud Light, they seem to be having a hard time reclaiming the crown of America’s top-selling beer, which they held with Bud Light for more than two decades.

What Is the No. 1 Best-Selling Beer Brand in America?

Modelo Especial, made by Anheuser-Busch’s competition, Constellation Brands, is now the top-selling beer in the U.S. CNN reports that for the four weeks ending on July 6, Bud Light captured 6.5 percent of beer sales at retail stores in terms of dollars, compared to 7.3 percent for Michelob Ultra.

Meanwhile, Modelo maintains its top share at 9.7 percent.

In a statement to Fox Business, consulting firm Bump Williams notes Bud Light is beginning to turn things around, more than a year after the Mulvaney scandal.

“Bud Light is still the #1 selling beer in the United States on a volume basis (cases) and has started to recover from the Dylan Mulvaney situation that occurred on April 1st of 2023,” the statement reads. “While $ sales aren’t quite back into the ‘positive’ yet, the declines for the brand have improved dramatically and Retailer support continues to improve week after week.”
