Boy Meets World star Danielle Fishel shared some shocking news with fans during the latest episode of her Pod Meets World podcast.
As she opened the show with her co-hosts and former co-stars Will Friedle and Rider Strong, she revealed she has been diagnosed with a form of breast cancer.
“I would like to share something with our listeners, something that Rider and Will were actually two of the first people I told the news to,” she begins. “I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer.”
What Is Ductal Carcinoma in Situ?
According to the Mayo Clinic, DCIS is a very early form of breast cancer and is found inside the milk duct of the breast. In this stage, the carcinoma is confined to the duct and has not spread to the surrounding tissue.
Her diagnosis is so early, in fact, Fishel says her doctors say that she is in Stage 0 and she will be fine when it’s all said and done.
“I’m having surgery to remove it. I’m going to be on some follow-up treatment. I’ve had to make a lot of decisions over the last couple of days,” she explains.

Fishel also confessed that she was reluctant to share the news with anyone outside of her closest family and friends. The plan was to keep it to herself until she was on the other side, but she realized doing that would rob others of learning from her experience, while also keeping her from learning from theirs.
“And then what I realized is the more people I talk to, the more people had their own experiences, either themselves being diagnosed with cancer or a family member who’s been diagnosed with cancer,” she shares.
A Routine Mammogram Led to Danielle Fishel’s Early Cancer Diagnosis
The actress, who played Topanga Lawrence on the show, also encourage women to get their annual mammograms, revealing that her early diagnosis came from her own screening.
“And so I want to share this because I hope that it will encourage anyone to get in there,” she says, speaking about her doctor’s appointment. “If it’s time for your appointment, if you’ve never had an appointment before, get in there. If you have to find out that you have cancer, find out when it’s at Stage 0, if possible.”
