Any fan familiar with Morgan Wallen‘s heartbreak-filled discography probably won’t be too surprised to learn that he’s not always the romantic type.

In a new interview on Bunnie Xo‘s Dumb Blonde podcast, the singer’s ex-fiancée, KT Smith, revealed how Wallen proposed to her. She says the experience was just right for where the couple was at the time — even though it wasn’t exactly the fairytale proposal most little girls dream about.

Smith and Wallen met on Snapchat in 2016 and started dating about a month later, and right from the beginning, she says, things were rocky.

Their first date was after a small show he played as an opening act for Josh Turner. Smith says Wallen invited her to hang out at a bar afterward, but they had a misunderstanding when it was time to leave.

“He was not thrilled that I wouldn’t go home with him,” she told Bunnie on the podcast.

Still, they continued to date — and just a few months later, in early 2017, they got engaged. At the time, Wallen wasn’t the big country music star he is today, though his musical career was in the fledgling stages.

Smith says that he popped the question in a parking lot, just minutes before she was due to clock in for work.

“He was like, ‘Are we gonna do this or what?’ And then we got engaged. That was the proposal, at the JCPenney parking lot in Knoxville,” she remembers. “Not, ‘Will you marry me,’ or anything. And I loved it, I was thrilled. And after work we got pizza and celebrated.”

She also says he picked out her ring from a mall jewelry store, and though it wasn’t flashy, she didn’t care.

“It was the whole ‘He could have given me a Ring Pop’ kind of thing,” Smith continues. “I wouldn’t care.”

At the time, she remembers being infatuated with Wallen. “I thought he hung the moon and stars,” she said. “Everything he did I was amazed by.”

Wallen and Smith’s engaged didn’t last long, but they continued an on-again, off-again relationship throughout his rise to fame. Finally, they broke things off right around the time that Smith found out she was pregnant with their son, Indigo Wilder, in 2019.
