As the saying goes, “The struggle is real.”
With the price of nearly everything inflated, Americans have had no choice but to turn to high interest rate credit cards that can provide an instant credit line to help make ends meet.
While the average credit card debt per person in America sits at just above $6,000, there are states that are way above that, where cardholders are in some serious hot water when it comes to racked up credit card debt.
People in These 5 States Have the Highest Credit Card Debt
Before climbing the proverbial ladder of credit card debt, let’s start at the bottom of the list with the 5 states with the lowest credit card debt.
West Virginia, Kentucky and Mississippi are among the less-burdened states. People in those states carry a credit card debt of just above $5,000.
The lowest two states when it comes to credit card debt per cardholder are Wisconsin and Iowa, both coming in at under $5,000 of credit card debt per person.
It’s interesting to note the credit card debt per cardholder seems to increase in areas where living is more expensive in general. As you start heading more north, the debt follows.
States with highest credit card debt per individual:
5. Virginia, $6,969 per cardholder
4. District of Columbia, $7,077 per cardholder
3. Connecticut, $7,082 per cardholder
2. New Jersey, $7084 per cardholder
1. Alaska, $8,026 per cardholder
It’s no secret that the price of goods and services in Alaska is inflated, as it’s hard to get to some areas of the state year-round. So, it would make sense that the squeeze is placed on its residents, making them turn to credit cards.

Alan Jackson’s former 18,622-square-foot plantation-style estate sits on 135 acres in Franklin, Tenn., an affluent rural suburb outside of Nashville.
