In Detroit, there are what’s called the Big 3 manufacturers: General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. These companies represent America at its heart and at its finest.
The history of car manufacturing has been very rich in America, and the automotive industry employs a lot of people.
Sign of the Times: General Motors Lays Off More Than 1,000 People
In a move that mirrors a lot of what’s happening in corporate America, General Motors is doing some downsizing to optimize its revenue.
GM is laying off more than 1,000 salaried employees in its software and services division following a review to streamline the unit’s operations. That 1,000 figure includes more than 600 people at their main facility in Detroit.
For those employees, they now have to find a different way to feed their families and survive in an ever-changing American economy.
A GM spokesperson delivered the message via email. It reads:
“As we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact. As a result, we’re reducing certain teams within the Software and Services organization. We are grateful to those who helped establish a strong foundation that positions GM to lead moving forward.”
The automotive market is in a weird transformation period, and the pandemic didn’t help it. The demand for cars skyrocketed as the plants were limited on how many they produced during COVID.
Now, there are cars galore, and with interest rates up, a lot of car companies are stuck with inventory that isn’t moving.
Car manufacturers are worried that this will catch up with them, so they are cutting the fat to try to get ahead of it.
Also, with electric vehicles all the rage nowadays, it’s costing more money for the car companies to develop newer technology.
The employees affected were notified on Monday (Aug. 19). There’s no word on their severance or possible job relocation status.
