‘I Was on a Rough Path’

‘I Was on a Rough Path’

Post Malone‘s upcoming country album, F-1 Trillion, includes a song called “Yours” that he wrote as a tribute to his two-year-old daughter.

Written from the perspective of imaging her wedding someday, the song is a tender message of fatherly love — but that’s only the beginning of Post’s thoughts on the life-changing experience of being a dad.

In a new installment of CBS Sunday Mornings, the singer says that his daughter saved his life.

“That’s true. Her and her mom. Four years ago, I was on a rough path,” Post relates, saying that the demons he was fighting came from “loneliness,” even though he was already a massive musical star.

“Getting up, having a good cry, drinking and then going and living your life,” he continues, recounting what his day-to-day was like at that time. “And then whenever you go lay down, drinking some more and having a good cry. And [thinking], ‘I gotta wake up tomorrow and do this again.'”

But that all changed when his partner and his daughter came into the picture.

“I don’t feel like that anymore, and it’s the most amazing thing,” Post goes on to say, adding that he “needed to” experience that hardship “to figure out who I am.”

The singer’s family stays out of the public eye, and he’s never shared his daughter’s name or exact birthday, though he has her initials — “DDP” — tattooed on his forehead.

He also tells CBS Sunday Mornings that “Yours” is just one of the many songs he’s written for his daughter. The song’s subject matter — the idea of her getting married one day — is something that’s often on his mind.

“I think about it a lot,” Post says.

F-1 Trillion is due out on Friday (Aug. 16). The project includes a slew of country collaborations with stars like Luke Combs, Dolly Parton, Morgan Wallen, Brad Paisley and others.
