Did ‘1923’ Season 2 Get Canceled?

Did ‘1923’ Season 2 Get Canceled?

Yellowstone fans know when Season 5 will resume, and we even have progress on a sequel, but what the heck is going on with prequel 1923?

Season 2 was promised, but then there was a Hollywood writer’s strike and a Screen Actor’s Guild Strike. The cast began working on other projects, and the show’s Instagram became a compilation page.

There is good news, bad news and sad news about Season 2 of 1923.

  • Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are the most famous cast members of 1923, but Brandon Sklenar (Spencer Dutton) and Julia Schlaepfer (Alexandra) became the breakout stars during Season 1.
  • Season 1 ended with a royalty twist nobody saw coming and an outsider in control of the Yellowstone ranch.
  • Earlier this year, a key cast member died in real life.

How Did Season 1 of 1923 End?

Alexandra and Spencer were on a ship headed for America when her ex-fiancé challenged him to a duel and was killed. Sklenar’s character was sent away on a dinghy, but she was kept on board because her father questioned their marriage. That’s when we learned she’s Countess of Sussex.

In Montana, Timothy Dalton’s Donald Whitfield had just paid off the Dutton family’s taxes, meaning he would have leverage and could soon take control of the property. Jacob Dutton (Ford) was growing strong enough to fight him after being shot and left for dead earlier in the season, but at this point, his crew is thinning.

John Dutton Jr. and his wife both died in separate incidents. Jack Dutton is ready to fight, but maybe a little too eager given the obstacles facing him. Ranch foreman Zane had just been beaten after lawmen bursted into his home and arrested his wife for violating anti-miscegenation laws.

Things were dire.

Is 1923 Season 2 Canceled?

Season 2 of 1923 has not been canceled. We just don’t know when it’s going to air!

Early 2025 seems most likely, as filming is now underway in Austin, Texas. Historically, Yellowstone prequels and sequels have followed a season of the lynchpin show. Figure five to eight episodes of Season 5, which begins Nov. 10, and we’re easily into the new year before we join Spencer on his boat.

1923 Season 2 Cast Update

Cole Brings Plenty played Pete Plenty Clouds during a small, but important subplot. He was becoming Teonna’s love interest as she tried to keep away from the priests hunting her down.

The actor died in April after a multi-day search for him, and his cause of death was sealed. It’s not clear if he’ll be re-cast or written off.

News is happier for other members of the cast of 1923: Michelle Randolph (Jack’s wife Elizabeth) got a job on another Taylor Sheridan series, Landman. The Billy Bob Thornton show has already filmed and could very well debut on Paramount+ before 1923 returns.

Father Renaud actor Sebastian Roché landed a gig on a Netflix show called Queen of Tears, which premiered in March.

Sklenar is starring opposite Blake Lively in a film called It Ends With Us.

Two new cast members fans can look for during Season 2 are Janet Montgomery (The Ex-Wife) — she plays Hillary, a “thoughtful woman who does not want to see injustice go unpunished” — and Jennifer Carpenter from Dexter.

Carpenter plays Mamie Fossett, a “highly capable U.S. Deputy Marshall who serves warrants and makes arrests with confidence ahead of her time.”

The rest of the cast is set to return for what is expected to be the final season of 1923.
