See Charley Crockett Showcase ‘$10 Cowboy’ on ‘Saturday Sessions’

Before performing at Stagecoach tonight, prolific Texas singer-songwriter brings three new album tracks to CBS Saturday Morning

Fresh off Friday’s release of his $10 Cowboy — and ahead of his Stagecoach set tonight — Charley Crockett visited CBS Mornings’ Saturday Sessions to perform three tracks from his latest album.

For the mini-set, Crockett and his hard-working band delivered the album’s opening title track, “America,” and “Solitary Road.”

The prolific Texas singer-songwriter has released a whopping nine records over the five-year span between 2018 and 2022, and with $10 Cowboy, 13 albums — all independently released — overall.

“I’ve never been on a major label. In fact, I just keep dodging them,” Crockett told Rolling Stone when we joined him backstage at a Miami gig in March. “I’ve been up to New York several times last year, entertaining label offers. But they just keep offering the same broke-dick deal.”

Crockett’s steady output harkens back to yesteryear of country music where artists like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and others routinely ascribed to an-album-a-year schedules. “Authenticity should not be mistaken for amateur realism. Authenticity is hard-won,” Crockett told Rolling Stone. “I couldn’t put out $10 Cowboy without all those records that came up before it.”

He continued, “The best thing about country music to me is the storytelling. I don’t think that’s exclusively a country thing, but I do think it’s a fundamental piece of good country music.”

Crockett will spend the majority of the summer on the road touring behind $10 Cowboy, an experience that will likely fuel his next album. “I actually have trouble writing just sitting right at the house. I need to be moving,” Crockett said. “When I’m on the road, people’s stories are just spilling out on the street in front of me, and I’m always wanting to take those pieces.”
