23 Jelly Roll Facts That Even Mama Might Not Know

Jelly Roll (Kindly) Puts Legal Karen in Her Place

One country fan is either worried about Jelly Roll’s wallet or not real happy about his John Denver interpolation with MGK.

The country star and hip-hop star came together for “Lonely Road,” a heartbreaker that borrows the melody of Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads,” but (with help from writers like Travis Barker) adds new lyrics.

Earlier this week, the pair performed it on the Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

  • Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” was a hit in 1971.
  • “Lonely Road” is currently inside the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
  • Jelly Roll and MGK previously feuded, but worked through their differences to become good friends.

Karen’s post on X asks, “How long will it take for @JellyRoll615 and @machinegunkelly to get sued for their song Lonely Road sounding exactly like Country Road, Take Me Home by John Denver?”

Jelly Roll said, in essence, chill out, Karen.

“We cleared it with the John Denver estate,” the “I Am Not Okay” singer writes. “They love our interpolation of the song. I appreciate your legal advice though Karen.”

During his acceptance speech at the People’s Choice Country Awards, MGK thanked John Denver family for supporting this new song. The songwriters on Denver’s song are also writers on “Lonely Road.” So too are Jelly Roll, MGK and Barker.

It remains to be seen if the new song will appear on Jelly’s Beautifully Broken album, due on Oct. 11.

It’s also unclear if MGK will try to push further into country music. Talking to Taste of Country prior to the PCCAs, he said he appreciated how country music made space for him.
