Kelsea Ballerini has spoken in the past about how she and her actor boyfriend Chase Stokes are each other’s biggest cheerleaders.

That means showing up to support each other in their respective fields, whether that’s walking red carpets, attending awards shows or simply cheering on each other’s projects. Up until now, that’s been pretty clearly divided, since Ballerini is a country singer and Stokes is an actor, starring in the Netflix drama series Outer Banks.

But when Ballerini decided to take on an acting role of her own — a single-episode story line in ABC series Doctor Odyssey — she says that there was no sense of competition with Stokes.

“It’s interesting because I feel like, I always call this his world,” she reflects to ET. “And then as soon as I opened myself up to kinda being like, ‘I wanna try this, because it’s always scared me, and I’m in this season of life where I’m trying to run toward things that do scare me,’ he was like, ‘It’s not my world anymore. It’s just a world that I am in, and you are welcome here.'”

Ballerini said it was important to her to get into acting on her own terms, without too much hand-holding from Stokes. But he did run lines with her for this role, she adds.

“I’ve always been very careful of, like, wanting to do it on my own and then asking questions where I need to,” she goes on to say. “And then the night before I’m like, ‘Alright, run the scene with me, babe. Let’s go.'”

Back in March, Ballerini said she was hoping to land an acting role in the near future, but that she didn’t think she’d wind up acting alongside Stokes, or in a cameo on Outer Banks.

“When it comes to my relationship there’s a beautiful level of him showing up on tour, or at my respective awards shows, and me getting to go to set and showing up to his events, where we just get to [be] each other’s support system in person,” she said at the time.

At the premiere event for the show in Los Angeles last week, Ballerini stayed tight-lipped on the details of her story line, but she did say her character is fun — and a little chaotic.

“I am distressed the whole time. There is no resolution for your girl. In my episode, I am screaming, crying, throwing up. Literally,” Ballerini said.

This technically isn’t Ballerini’s first-ever acting role, since she had a guest spot on Nashville in 2016. She’s also slotted to be a coach on an upcoming season of The Voice.
