Shania Twain Reunites With a Sweet Fan, 40 Years Later

Shania Twain never forgets her biggest fans.

Over the weekend, the singer made a trip to Newfoundland and Labrador – the easternmost province of Canada – as part of her current tour, and her show on Sunday (Aug. 18) included a very special guest.

That was Gloria, a woman who has been a fan of Twain’s for at least four decades.

The singer brought Gloria out onstage mid-set and explained the whole story, which dates back to Twain’s early days as a singer in a cover band called Flirt. Back then, she embarked on her first-ever tour of east Canada, which marked the first time she’d ever left home.

“During that tour I met Gloria, a local girl who took care of me and showed me around,” Twain explained on social media when Gloria walked out onstage. “All these years later, we were reunited.”

Gloria held back tears as she walked out and hugged the country superstar, and Twain turned to the audience to explain just how special it was to connect with another woman while she was on the road.

“On these tours, when you’re the only girl in a band, you never meet any girls. The only girls you meet are the girls that are trying to hook up with the band,” Twain said. “And so it was just very odd that I met a girlfriend, someone that I connected with who wasn’t out to jump one of the guys.”

In fact, Twain even spent the night at Gloria’s house – and Gloria still lives in that same house, she told the singer onstage.

“She treated me like one of the family,” Twain continues. “She took me to one of the beaches. She said, ‘Do you wanna go to the beach?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’ve never been in the sea before.’ It’s August, and I’m thinking, well, ‘It’s gotta be warm,’ you know, and I was so excited. It was so freaking cold.

“But the funny thing is, I’m still doing exactly the same thing as I did when I met you,” she adds, turning to Gloria. “I’m still in Newfoundland on a stage singing.”

Shania Twain‘s best songs changed country music in ways never imagined before 1995. The superstar’s career as a charting recording artist lasted less than a decade and included few accolades (including just one CMA Award) relative to her commercial success, but few female artists under 40 will fail to name her as one of three major reasons they chase this country music dream for a living. Perhaps only Dolly Parton is listed more frequently as an influence.
