The blue light special was a thing in Kmart‘s history that arguably made them an even bigger staple in America. When the blue light was flashing on an item, everyone in the store would hurry over to it to see the deep, temporary discount on said item.
Slowly, Kmart has been closing down its stores across America, and it has finally come down to the final full-size Kmart taking its final victory lap.
The Last Full-size Kmart in America Closing
Kmart is now owned by a brand called Transformco, which has the last remaining Kmart locations in America. One is a small, condensed version of the mega-mart in Miami, Florida.
The other, and the one that is closing at the end of October, is in Bridgehampton, New York. This particular, final-standing location is about 25 years old and has been puttering along for the past decade. According to Fox Business, there are also three stores in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
This location has withstood the test of time and bankruptcies. It was a part of Kmart’s first bankruptcy in 2002, and then when Kmart was purchased by Sears, another bankruptcy in 2018.
The last-standing mini-Kmart, if you will, is not even a shell of what it once was. The location was purchased by Home Goods and turned into a Home Goods store, with the Kmart section taking up what used to be its lawn and garden center.
If you are an ’80s or ’90s kid, you remember picking up an Icee at the front counter, then cruising the store for the best pair of jorts (jean shorts).
It’s a shame that some of the only things we have to remember from our childhoods are slowly fading away, like this final Kmart location will do on Oct. 20.
