Maren Morris is back with another new song, “I Hope I Never Fall in Love,” from her upcoming EP Intermission.
The song is anchored by a slowed-down take on the classic drumbeat from the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby,” but — as the song’s title suggests — Morris is more interested in stepping on lovestruck fantasies than embracing them. “Ooh, I’m a woman of my word/Love, you only did me dirty,” Morris sings on the bridge, as the song builds to an exhilarating peak, “Forever was a fucking lie, so goodbye/You only made it worse/I hope I never fall in love.”
In a statement, Morris described “I Hope I Never Fall in Love” as the “afterglow of a shitshow” (Morris and her ex-husband, Ryan Hurd, filed for divorce last October). She continued, “It’s a bittersweet heartbreaker because I’m in self-protection mode but still want to feel things. So throwing parties, going home with a stranger, popping champagne, whatever we need to do to process our trauma, it’s not a pretty road to healing. I, of course, do want to fall in love again, but I can’t put my heart through it just yet, so here’s a number about this strange but constructive (and destructive) window of my life.”

Morris co-wrote “I Hope I Never Fall in Love” with Delacey, Evan Blair, and Lucy Healey, while Blair also provided production. It marks the second offering from Intermission, following “Cut!,” a collaboration with Julia Michaels that dropped last month. Intermission is set to arrive Aug. 12, and it’ll follow her 2023 EP, The Bridge. Her last full-length album, Humble Quest, arrived in 2022.
Morris has a bunch of headlining tour dates lined up later this summer, with the next leg of her RSVP Redux Tour starting July 26 at Vibrant Music Hall in Waukee, Iowa and wrapping Sept. 29 with a set at the All Things Go festival in Columbia, Maryland. During the trek, she’ll receive support from Delacey and Anna Graves on select dates.
