Former U.S. president Donald Trump, who is currently on the campaign trail for his 2024 presidential bid, sustained non-life threatening injuries at a rally on Saturday (July 13) when a shooter opened fire in an apparent attempted assassination attempt.
Just minutes after the fact, Cody Johnson spoke out about the incident while playing a show in Chicago, and led the crowd in a rendition of “God Bless America” as a call for unity.

Johnson was far from the only star to comment on the shooting. Other country stars quickly began to check in on social media to condemn the gunman’s violence. Many also offered prayers for Trump and his family, as well as the family of the rally attendee who was killed by the gunfire, and those of the two other people critically injured during the incident.
Several of those statements came from singers like Kid Rock and Jason Aldean, who frequently espouse their conservative leanings and support for Trump. However, other messages came from stars like Carly Pearce and Scotty McCreery, who don’t often speak publicly about politics.

- He was photographed with a bloodied ear, but his injuries appeared minor as he was whisked away by United States Secret Service.

- In a statement he released shortly afterwards, Trump recalled hearing a “whizzing sound” and feeling “the bullet ripping through the skin.”
- The shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa. Crooks was killed by Secret Service members at the rally. No motive was immediately available.
- A press statement from the Secret Service indicates that one spectator was killed in the shooting, and two others are critically injured.
